I Had Hoped

 John Emerson, ‘27

Branches poke, needles stab,

Sap clings to our hands as we ascend the trees

Moonlight has the honor to hold her body, as it

Caresses her face, reflecting beauty,

There’s only her to see.

Smooth as stone, still as rock

As poised as a statue,

Emerald eyes cast a glare to the stars,

But I don’t look, for

There's only her to see.

Accidentally,

Losing our grip, we plummet back

To the mortal ground

With it’s sticks and stones

Whom I do ignore

For there’s only her, running free.

Feet race, leaves crunch,

As our bodies leap into action

Without a word, with souls

Carried by the wind

We hunt for our next adventure

Water swoons, as we sway,

Making our way into the pond

In the black of night

Without a care

For there’s only her

For moments more

Waves splash, as we play,

Laughing until our hearts give way

In the dark warm night

My heart burns out

For I had hoped

That there would be she

And only her

Forever and always?

But never again

Our summer obsessions

Must come to an end.
